Random Numbers: The Temptation of Takeout; Meat and Sugar Trump Fruits and Veggies; Children of the Corn Syrup #Fruit #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 7th
Why They Call It Fast Food
Fully 61 percent of American adults who buy takeout food admit that they start eating it before they even get it home.
A Nation of Meat Heads
In merry and widespread disdain for nutritionists’ recommendations, Americans now serve up as much as 220 pounds of meat per year per person. Meanwhile, a paltry 14 percent of us consume the five servings of fruits and veggies per day that the experts insist we need.
As the Numbers Grow, So Do Our Figures
Poodwaddle.com is a website that presents various global statistics in real time, meaning that the numbers constantly change like those on an odometer to reflect the exact estimated number at that moment. By the time you read this the numbers will have changed, but as of noon Pacific Daylight Time on September 1, here were the global numbers for the amounts of the following commodities produced worldwide so far this year. The figures are in metric tons.
- Milk: 426,887,329
- Fruits: 426,715,246
- Vegetables: 510,200,817
- Sugar: 1,028,172,857
The math is pretty stark: We produce, globally, more sugar than we do fruit and veggies combined. Even worse, we find ways to consume it.
What a Coincidence: The Same Period When Our Obesity Rates Took Off
High fructose corn syrup didn’t exist until 1957 and wasn’t produced on an industrial scale until the 1970′s, but U.S. consumption of the stuff soared by 1,000 percent between 1970 and 1990, and by 1997, regular sugar-based sucrose, which made up 83 percent of all sweeteners consumed in 1970, accounted for just 43 percent, while virtually all the remaining 56 percent was now HFCS.

The Uglier Side of Obesity #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 7th
Dr. J offers his irreverent, slightly irrelevant, but possibly useful opinions on health and fitness. A Florida surgeon and fitness freak with a black belt in karate, he runs 50 miles a week and flies a Cherokee Arrow 200.
Many of us in this blogging community are concerned with the continued rise in the level of obesity in our world. This is not a small problem, and it impacts all of us in several areas of our lives, whether we are obese or not.
I think most of you know that obesity is not a lightweight adversary and will not be defeated easily. I wonder, however, do you really know how powerful this condition really is? Being obese is not ugly, but the effects on the individual from obesity, in my opinion, are. I have looked at this uglier side of obesity as a health care professional for many years now, and this is some of what I have observed.
Obesity may mean that your mother or father, your sister or brother, your significant others’ children, or your significant other, or you or your children, or their children are sick with an acquired illness or have been injured due to their obesity and obesity inducing behaviors.
Obesity might be a 32-year-old man, 430 pounds, walking with a cane, telling stories about what he did back in the day. It may be a 14-year-old boy, so heavy that his hips are already malformed and he can barely walk, his expressed hopes of being a football player someday a disheartening dream.
Unfortunately, many of these people are not going to change their behaviors, nor be able to recover when they get this disease of injury. They are not going to change no matter what drugs they need to take, nor body parts that need to be operated on or removed. They are not going to change when they need CPAP to sleep. They are not going to change when they find that they can’t conceive or have children. They may abandon their sexuality, their sexual identity and their relationships. They may give up many pleasures, activities and potential experiences in their lives for the questionable pleasures that keep them obese.
They may lie, rationalize, deny or use any other method to be able to continue the obesogenic behaviors that have become important to them, regardless of the cost. They may look for excuses, words and justifications that will allow them to be this way, and not take the self-responsibility for it that could lead to their salvation. They may call it emotional eating, a food addiction, a disease, a disorder, an obsession, binge eating or an eating disorder not otherwise specified, but they will not seek treatment for it.
Many of these obese people may claim that they do not want to be obese, but they seem to want everything that’s making them obese, or they are in denial of the dangers of being obese. They will all too often go to their grave much too young, wasting much of their life, and hurting those who remain behind and love them because of this self-acquired condition.
This is the uglier side of obesity and why I believe that it will not be defeated with any of the insignificant actions that have been bandied about, such as calorie counts on menus, taxes on sodas or asking the food industry to do their part.
Most people with obesity need help in changing, and our obesogenic society will not only not help them, but it will do everything it can to keep them the way they are. It’s not that nothing can be done, it’s just that I’m afraid that nothing will be done. I feel this way because it seems to me that every useful idea that can make a difference is opposed by enough people and corporations to prevent it.
I feel that until substantial useful ideas are tried, no improvement will happen, and we will continue to see what we have already seen, and I don’t like it. We must have extensive societal changes that, like it or not, address the core obesogenic problems, like our distorted, exaggerated relationship with altered foods and our entrenched avoidance of an active lifestyle. I think it will take actions that are drastic and strict. It will take laws that take control out of people’s and businesses’ hands, and it will take every aspect of society doing things that help rather than what is making them money. We are fighting both obesity and greed, and it is an uphill battle.
Hope for the individual
I do have hope for the individual with the strength to do what they need to do to be healthier and fit. This will take doing the hard work until society will make the larger helpful changes to make it easier for all of us. It will take the individual’s serious commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
We must take an honest look at ourselves and our detrimental behaviors, as well as the effort that it will require for us to change and acquire new habits. I know this is possible, because as well as looking at the uglier side of obesity, I have also seen the beautiful side of health and fitness. I know people that find the time to consistently exercise, to show restraint in their eating choices while still not depriving themselves, and that do not believe that just because most people can’t do it that they can still make healthy choices in their lives. Yes, it may take walking a more challenging pathway, but know you can be successful and you are not alone on this voyage.

3 Different Kundalini Yoga Poses #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 6th
Kundalini yoga is a type of yoga that focuses on inner peace, flexibility, and maintaining your sense of focus. This is one of the most popular types of yoga, due to its slow pace and focus on individuality. The three kundalini yoga poses described in this article can be done anywhere, anytime, by people of any age or ability level.
Cat-Cow
While cat-cow is not one of the most well-known kundalini yoga poses, it is one of the best to get you warmed up for your yoga sessions. To perform this exercise properly, start by placing your yoga mat down on a flat surface that is free from all other distractions. Come onto all fours on your mat, making sure that your hands are positioned directly under your shoulders with your fingers spaced widely apart and your knees directly under your hips with your shins flat on the floor. At this point, you should be in a straight line from your head to your tailbone. Take a few deep breaths. As you exhale your breath, use the muscles in your core to push your back up to the sky. Allow your head to curve down to your chest, and look to the ground. You should look like a cat that is arching its back. Now, inhale your breath, and press down on your back, pushing your stomach to the ground. You should now look like a sway-backed cow. Continue this movement, being sure to inhale and exhale properly, for at least 30 seconds.
Tree Pose
Tree pose is a very popular kundalini yoga pose that helps to center the yogi. To perform this exercise, start by standing tall on your yoga mat with your feet together. Bring your palms together at the center of your chest as if you were praying. Carefully lift your right heel off the ground, and place it on the inside of your left calf. Rotate your right hip so that your right knee is pointing to the side wall. Your legs should form a triangle while in this pose. Hold your hands at your chest or carefully push them overhead to the sky. Continue holding this pose for at least 30 seconds and then switch to the other leg.
Corpse Pose
Finally, the corpse pose is a great way to end any kundalini yoga session. Start by laying down on your back on your yoga mat. Rest your arms by your sides with your palms facing towards the sky and stretch your legs out in front of your body. Relax your feet and allow them to fall to the sides. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Try to eliminate all thoughts from your mind. If you have a thought, acknowledge it, and then dismiss it. Instead, focus simply on how your body feels in this position. Hold the pose for at least five minutes in order to achieve optimal results.

4 Beauty Benefits of Cucumber #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 6th
While you may know the many health benefits associated with the cucumber, such as its ability to aid in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even some types of cancer, chances are you aren’t aware of its many beauty benefits. When used effectively, cucumbers can help you lose weight, reduce lines and wrinkles, decrease puffy eyes, and even treat a sunburn.
Weight Loss
One of the best ways that cucumbers can work to help you increase your natural beauty is through their ability to produce dramatic weight loss. Cucumbers can help you achieve your weight loss goals through a variety of methods. First, cucumbers are extremely low in calories, making them a great substitute for chips, pretzels, or other common high calorie snacks. In addition, cucumbers contain high amounts of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is important if you are trying to lose weight for several reasons. First, foods that contain high amounts of fiber are relatively “bulky,” meaning that they take up a lot of room in your stomach. This means that you’ll feel fuller faster, and won’t have the need to overeat. In addition, fiber-rich foods are slow digesting. This means that it takes a long time for the food to actually leave the stomach and enter the digestive tract. This aids in keeping you feeling full for a longer period of time, which again helps prevent overeating and potential weight gain.
Decreases Lines and Wrinkles
Another way that cucumbers can help to improve your beauty routine is through their ability to decrease lines and wrinkles on your face. Your body is composed of almost 90% water, and therefore it is no surprise that when you are dehydrated, the effects begin to show on your face. Cucumbers also contain extremely high amounts of water, and are therefore helpful both in keeping your body hydrated, as well as preventing the signs of dehydration from popping up on your face.
Decreases Puffy Eyes
One of the best known beauty tricks associated with cucumbers is their ability to decrease puffy eyes. Research has found that cucumbers contain a high amount of ascorbic acid, which help to prevent water retention. When fresh slices are placed over your eyes, this can help to decrease water retention, thereby reducing puffiness overall.
Treating Sunburn
Finally, if you have been out in the sun for too long and are now dealing with the consequences, cucumber may be just what the doctor ordered. Cucumbers contain natural coolant properties, and when applied directly to the skin can help both in the reduction of pain, as well as increase the healing process of the damaged skin. For best results when treating a sunburn, try to deal with it as soon as possible. This means that instead of waiting the sunburn out and seeing what will happen, you should put some cucumber slices on it as soon as possible!
