Obesity and Disease: The Inflammation Connection #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 3rd
The statistical association between extreme overweight on the one hand and various specific health problems on the other has been well documented, and a variety of factors have been proposed as the cause-and-effect linkage between obesity and, for example, diabetes, heart trouble and cancer.
Now being added to that list of factors: inflammation, the heat and swelling that is our body’s friend when it fights viruses or infections, but just the opposite when it takes off on its own, especially when it mistakes the body for an enemy and launches a defensive assault.
The most visible results of this malfunction are arthritis, asthma, allergies and gum disease, but uncontrolled inflammation also commonly precedes diabetes, which is associated with heart disease and aids the growth and spread of cancer.
What tends to trigger unwarranted inflammation? Start with obesity in general, because of its effects on the liver, and then single out sugar, white flour, high-fructose corn syrup, corn and soybean oils, and trans fats as leading culprits in particular.
In other words, inflammation thrives on the basic American junk food diet, which is more than can be said for those who live on it. One study found that just eating a 900-calorie fast-food breakfast sends the body’s inflammation markers soaring for four hours.
Your best defenses against such inflammation spikes are a diet short on simple carbs and long on fruits and high-fiber meals, and exercise to burn fats and reduce stress, another inflammation-feeder. Of course, a healthy diet and regular exercise are your best defenses against a great number of unpleasant things.

Fruits and Vegetables May Help Cut Lung Cancer Risk #Fruit #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 2nd
Breathing in carcinogens, like tobacco smoke, radon gas, and asbestos, heightens the risk of lung cancer, especially smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 90% of lung cancer deaths in men are a result of smoking and smoking causes 80% of lung cancer deaths in women.
And while not smoking is the foremost way to reduce the risk of lung cancer, better habits, like eating more fruits and vegetables, may also help cut your risk of lung cancer.
Published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a new study found smokers eating a lot of fruits and vegetables had a lower risk of getting lung cancer.
For the study, the researchers analyzed data on 450,000 adults from 10 European countries, asking participants to fill out questionnaires about their eating habits and lifestyle; including occupation, medical history, exercise, smoking, and drinking alcohol.
During a nine year period, 1,613 of the individuals were diagnosed with lung cancer, but among smokers, those who ate the greatest variety of fruits and vegetables were 27% less likely to develop squamous cell lung cancer.
Squamous cell lung cancer is a very common form of the disease that usually manifests in the bronchial tubes in the lungs.
The scientists point out that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is key. Foods like spinach, kale, berries, melons, cabbage, cauliflower, and eggplant.

5 Health Benefits of Cantaloupe #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 2nd
A cantaloupe is a type of melon that belongs to the cucumber family. Cantaloupes can have a light yellow-orange color or a deeper salmon hue. Known for its low calorie content and sweet and enticing aroma, cantaloupes are the most popular kind of melons in the US. Cantaloupes are usually best during the summer months. Here are some health benefits that you can enjoy when snacking on cantaloupes:
1. Great Source of Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene
If you are looking to incorporate vitamin A sources into your diet then cantaloupes will make a great addition to your food plan. In fact, cantaloupes contain concentrated amounts of beta-carotene. The body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A. Both nutrients are essential for the maintenance of healthy eyesight. In a study that included more than 50,000 women whose ages ranged from 45 to 67, it was found that those who consumed high amounts of vitamin A on a daily basis reduced their risk of developing cataracts by as much as 40%. Those women who ate cantaloupes as a regular part of their diet also had a lower risk of surgery from cataracts. On the contrary, women whose diets included a lot of salt, butter and unhealthy fats had a higher risk of cataract surgery. Research has also shown that there may be a possible link between beta-carotene and cancer prevention.
2. Great Source of Vitamin C
Aside from being a significant source of vitamin A, cantaloupes are also good sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which functions in the water-soluble parts of the body. As you know, antioxidants help fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals spread damage to your cells, causing diseases and signs of aging. Vitamin C also strengthens your immune system by stimulating your white blood cells. Your white blood cells are responsible for killing viruses, bacteria and other foreign elements that seek to enter your body.
3. Promotes the Health of Your Lungs
A recent study showed that consumption of a vitamin A-rich food like cantaloupe is also beneficial to smokers. If you’re a smoker or someone who is constantly exposed to second-hand smoke then you might want to make cantaloupes a regular part of your diet. One of the carcinogens found in cigarette smoke reportedly created a vitamin A deficiency in the body. When you start incorporating more vitamin A into your diet, the deficiency is reversed and you also lower your risk of developing lung diseases like emphysema.
4. Prevents Cardiovascular Disease
Cantaloupes are also rich in a compound called adenosine. Adenosine is typically administered to patients who have heart disease since this compound has blood-thinning properties. When your blood is thin, you can prevent blood-clotting in the cardiovascular system. The folate present in cantaloupes and all types of melons also help in preventing a heart attack.
5. Reduces Stress
Cantaloupe might also be an ideal fruit to eat during those times when you are feeling anxious and stressed. Cantaloupe is rich in potassium which normalizes the heartbeat and promotes the supply of oxygen to the brain. As a result, you feel more relaxed and focused.

Weight Discrimination or Legitimate Precaution: Sometimes It’s Tough as Nails to Tell the Difference #WeightLoss #Weight Loss #Diet
Sep 2nd
A Troubling News Item That May Make You Wish You Were in the Business of Chair Repairing
Just when you think that every commercial business that could be accused of weight discrimination probably has been accused of weight discrimination, up pops a new entry on the list. In this case, welcome to Dekalb County, Georgia, where a woman we won’t name was hit with a $5 “overweight” surcharge by a nail salon we also won’t name, on the grounds that the salon chairs have a capacity of 200 pounds, and when damaged by persons weighing more than that, cost $2,500 to fix.
When the customer complained, her $5 was refunded, but she was told to please take her nails somewhere else in the future. “That’s discrimination because of my weight,” the customer griped to the media. “Come on, we’re in America, you can’t do that.”
A few observations: First, yes you can do that. You can be sued for doing that, of course, but there’s a difference between discrimination, which is an arbitrary mistreatment of someone on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity or physical handicap, and differential treatment based on some practical consideration. You must be a certain height to ride some rollercoasters. You must be able to see to rent a car. You must be able to patronize a commercial business without damaging it.
Second, the photo of the woman in question indicates a weight somewhere between 250 and 300 pounds. That’s a pretty challenging load for a lot of things designed to support humans; some bathroom scales, for example, top out at 250. So the salon may be justified in this matter. On the other hand —
Third, $2,500 per chair? Just for repairs? What are they made of, platinum? For $2,500, I could get you a chair that could hold any two Oakland Raiders linemen of your choice. And what’s more –
Fourth, while it may be true that a seriously overweight customer can damage your facilities, the way you deal with that is by charging the particular customer at fault for the repairs. You don’t deal with it by requiring everyone who resembles that customer to pay a fine or make partial restitution. That’s why you don’t see signs in antique shops reading, “If anybody breaks it, you’ve bought it.”
With apologies to the retail nail salon industry, an industry that we got along just fine without until about 15 years ago, the CalorieLab call on this one goes to the aggrieved, if hefty, customer.
